ABOUT FIONA

Born and raised in Clackmannanshire, I’m still here now.  I love the hills and the fields and the winding roads between our small towns of the 'Wee County'.

When I was young my dad gave me his old camera, it was nothing fancy, but I would take it out with me, making photographs of my friends and our family dog, Flash.  I feel a need to record thing
s.  Memories.  Moments.  It’s a part of me, and photography facilitates that.  It’s a good job I love it too.

My passion is making photographs of people.  Helping to tell their stories.  I have always adored my camera, but shyness held me back.  Stubborn-ness is also a trait of mines though and one day I decided that I would learn portrait photography and eventually start my own business.  Following that decision, I began photographing hundreds of locals in my little studio that I, daily, put up and down in my kitchen.  Aside from that I also photographed on location, weddings and events as well as working freelance for the local paper and various organisations along the way.  I am very proud of my self-taught beginnings, spending hours working out what I was doing wrong because I was determined to learn from it.  Eventually I went to college thinking it would be a chance to earn a certificate and make connections, but it turned out to be so much more, and was just as much the making of me as my self-taught beginnings.  I went on to study for my degree and then my path led me to teaching photography and media at the same college I was taught.  I've been teaching since January 2018 and have since earned my teaching qualification for further education as well as a beautiful award for 'Academic Staff Member of the Year 2024' as voted for by students.

A quote by Andy Warhol - 'A picture means I know where I was every minute.  That's why I take pictures.  It's a visual diary'.  I think we need to be careful with quotes, they can generalise somewhat, but this one encapsulates my personal photographic journey, and what photography means to me, to an absolute tee.
